Winter Freeze Tips
-
If your water stops due to frozen pipes, turn off the main water valve to avoid damage when they thaw. Homes with a basement usually have a shutoff valve where the water enters the home. Homes without a basement usually have a shutoff valve where the water enters the foundation.
-
Cover all exposed pipes with insulation material from a building supply or hardware store.
-
Check your foundation: Close vents and seal any cracks or holes that could let cold air in where water pipes enter the house.
-
If temperatures drop below freezing for 12 hours or more, open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can circulate, and let the faucet farthest from your main water valve drip slightly.
-
Locate and mark your meter box with a stick or something tall enough to find after snowfall.
-
Be sure outside faucets are wrapped with insulating material.
